Khaos Foundation

Khaos Foundation Limited is a non-profit company limited by guarantee. It owns the Khaos code and the attribution standard, and with Khaos AI Ltd it holds the promises Khaos makes to artists in their constitutions rather than in policies that can change.

  • The Khaos code (Khaos Workshop), licensed free to any musician, and licensed so it cannot be reworked into a scraping tool.
  • The attribution standard: the record, for each output, of how much each training track contributed.
  • A guardian share in the operating company, Khaos AI Ltd, with a veto over any sale, change of purpose, or revision of the fee caps. The caps are 10% of what a model earns, and 5% permanently for the Founding Cohort.

Khaos AI Ltd, the operating company, licenses the toolkit from the Foundation and does the paid work. Its articles entrench the mission, the fee caps and the consent principles.

  • Artist ownership of models: Khaos can never claim rights over a model an artist trained.
  • Consent: nothing trains on work the rights holder has not agreed to.
  • The free licence for the toolkit: no future owner can charge for it.
  • Protection of artist models and attribution records if the company winds up.

Alongside the Foundation sits the Guild of Fine Tuners: artists whose models have been examined and admitted. The Guild certifies that a model's training data was the artist's to use, recorded on a public, hash-chained ledger. The toolkit stays free and ungated to everyone; the Guild is how a composer can prove a model is clean.

  • Khaos Foundation Limited and Khaos AI Ltd are both incorporated.
  • The guardian share and entrenched articles are drafted and going through adoption.
  • The Foundation's guardians have not yet been appointed. They will be named on this page when they are.
  • The Foundation has signed Section 1 of the EU General-Purpose AI Code of Practice.

Guardians will be listed here once appointed.
