The EU Code of Practice and Khaos
Khaos Foundation Limited has signed Section 1 of the European Union's Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-generated Content, as the provider of the Khaos Workshop and the Khaos Listening Space. Section 1 is about marking what an AI system makes and letting anyone detect it. The signature form went to the European AI Office on 16 October 2026; it takes effect once the Office assesses the Code adequate, and no earlier than the day the Article 50 obligations apply.
What we committed to, and where it stands
| Commitment | What Khaos does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Mark every output in a machine-readable way | Two marks on every piece: an inaudible watermark, and a signed record (Content Credentials) saying it is AI-generated. If a piece cannot be marked, it cannot leave. | In place |
| Make the record signed, time-stamped and tamper-evident | Each record is signed by the installation that made it, with a key it issued itself, and time-stamped by a public service when it answers. An edit to a signed file shows as tampered. Until Khaos certifies an installation's key at enrolment, a third-party tool shows the signer as unknown; the Guild Register's lookup confirms a piece by its content regardless. | In place |
| Offer a free way to check a file | A free verifier on your own machine, on every Khaos Workshop and Listening Space, and at the Guild Register, which runs in Nuremberg, Germany. | In place |
| Forbid removing the marks | Khaos's licence and terms forbid removing or altering either mark, or passing a piece off as made by a person. | In place |
| Say what the marks survive | Measured and published, including what removes them. | See the results |
| Let other tools find a piece's record from its marks, by 2 February 2027 | A lookup on the Guild Register, in the Content Credentials soft-binding form, that any such tool can use to find a piece's record from its fingerprint; the watermark narrows the search and never decides it. | In place |
What signing does not mean
- The Code is voluntary. Signing it is a public commitment to these practices, not a certificate that they are enough.
- Our commitment covers the version of the Code published on 10 June 2026.
- We signed Section 1 only. Section 2 is about labelling deep fakes and published text, and is addressed to those who publish such content.

Hear when there is something to try
The Workshop is a working prototype and the Listening Space is in proof of concept, both for public release in 2027. The toolkit is free to use.
